Contained Hazardous Materials Response
Tuesday, December 5, 2017

On December 5, 2017, the DNREC Emergency Response Team, Kent County Special Operations, and the Kent County Hazardous Materials Decontamination Team staffed by the Little Creek and Leipsic Fire Companies responded to a vehicle accident involving a car and a tractor trailer carrying assorted chemicals. When the truck driver braked, the load in the trailer shifted, causing concern that containers inside may have been damaged. The ERT worked with other State agencies to safely move the truck to a nearby highway construction project in order to assess it, re-opening Route 1 and improving responder safety. ERT staff donned protective clothing and breathing apparatus, and entered the trailer to assess the containers for damage using air monitoring equipment, pH paper, a thermal imaging camera, and visual inspection. They determined that, although a few containers had shifted, none were leaking. The load was allowed to leave the incident site to safely continue to its destination without posing a risk to the driver or other motorists.
